Prep work should include removing all loose paint, either with a pressure washer or by scraping; removing any trace of mildew using bleach and water or a commercial solution, and sealing or covering dark stains; caulking all seams, corners and around windows or trim; applying epoxy filler to repair serious woodwork problems; covering dark stains; sanding all rough surfaces, and priming the bare wood with a bonding primer. You may be wondering how to tell if you’re applying enough paint. Unfortunately, there’s no exact formula. In general, you’ll have better success applying two thin coats than struggling to cover the primer with one thick coat of paint. Thin coats dry more thoroughly and don’t cause problems like runs, sags and paint buildup that are associated with heavy layers of paint. Your goal is to get enough paint on the surface to allow the brush to glide smoothly, but not leave so much that it forms runs or sags.
Once you have the interior square footage calculated, experts say you’ll want to divide by 350. 350 square feet is the average coverage of a gallon of paint (though some say 250-400 square feet). The average coverage for a gallon of primer is 200 square feet. Your square footage divided by 350 square feet gets you the number of gallons of paint you’ll need. Square footage divided by 200 gets you the number of gallons of primer you’ll need. You can save money by ensuring you don’t buy too much paint. Home Painters Louisville CO

Power washing – $0.42–$1.40/sq. ft.. You might think you can save some money by power washing the exterior yourself, but homeowners can get a bit trigger-happy with a power washer in their hands. The pressure from the washer can take them unawares, breaking windows, leaking water into window frames and siding joints, and gouging wood. It’s probably wiser to use a hose and scrubbing brush. Rinse off any cleaning solutions thoroughly. Louisville House Painting
If you have engineered stone on your home, it is possible to paint it a solid color to help it blend in with the rest of the exterior. Most stone siding is not actually stone, but is a type of fiber cement. It therefore holds paint similarly to fiber cement, but because it’s not primed the way that planks are, it will need to be primed and then painted. This makes the cost to paint 1,500 sq.ft. of stone siding around $4,500-$6,000. Louisville Home Painting
Once you have the approximate square footage that you’ll need to paint, remember that a gallon of paint generally covers between 250 and 400 square feet. You’ll need more if you’re painting a rough, porous material, or if you want to paint a dark house a much lighter color. Depending on your color choice, you may need a more expensive tinted primer to help with the color transition. Louisville Home Painting

Aside from the size and the material of your home, there are several factors that affect how much it costs to paint your home. If you paint the home yourself you’ll almost certainly spend less than you would if you hired professional painters. If you’re doing a cost comparison, remember to include the cost of painting equipment when you’re tallying the cost of a DIY paint job. You’ll need a ladder, brushes and buckets in addition to the paint itself. For an interior job, you’ll probably want tape and a drop cloth.

If you have two weeks, a ladder and some experience, this makes an excellent DIY project. On most surfaces, it is forgiving of mistakes and easy to work with. Correcting mistakes only adds more time and not much more expense. However, a professional will get it done faster and with a better finish. If you don’t have 2 to 3 weeks to spare, find a professional painter near you today.
Shellac primer is very versatile in that it has the fastest drying time and adheres better than all other primers. It permanently covers stains and odors. However, be advised, it has the strongest smell and a sticky consistency. Clean-up is extensive and involves denatured alcohol or acetone nail polish remover. Because of this, a sprayer cannot be used to apply the shellac primer. For shellac primer, the cost is about $20 to $60 a gallon. Louisville House Painting
A single gallon of paint can run anywhere from $20 to $80 per gallon. Professionals get a contractor discount of anywhere from 25 to 50 percent. For rough siding, like stucco, you’ll need to use 10% to 20% more paint. Some textures, like wood and stucco, require extra paint because they have more surface to cover in a tiny area compared to smooth siding. Use the highest quality exterior paint your budget will allow for your project. It will look the nicest and save you money by offering better coverage and durability. Better coverage means fewer coats and fewer work hours. You’ll also go a few years longer without needing to shell out more cash for a new coat. How do you know how much paint you're paying for? Here's some helpful math: Louisville Home Painting
Oil-based paint provides a smoother application but requires a longer drying time. The extended drying time is helpful if you make a mistake. With this paint, you will also notice more thorough coverage. Some of the disadvantages of this type of paint include the fact that it is a more expensive option, is high in environmentally harmful VOCs, and requires a daunting clean-up with mineral spirits or turpentine. It is prone to cracking, fading, and yellowing. The cost for oil-based paint is $20 to $70 per gallon.

If you have a deck on your home, you will likely need to paint or stain it regularly. Before staining or painting, the deck needs to be cleaned and possibly stripped, depending on the product used initially. Also, after the deck is finished, a waterproofing product needs to be applied. The cost to have a deck painted or stained is between $850 and $1,000 depending on the size of the deck. When considering painting styles, be sure to consider how the colors will interact with one another, as well as the rest of the room. For example, accent walls should always be highly visible, and either be the wall you see first when entering the room or the wall that your focus will be on once you’re in the room to be the most effective. The accent wall color can be repeated as smaller accents on pillows and throw rugs throughout the room.  Louisville Home Painting
Porches are usually painted at the same time as the rest of your exterior, and they frequently are painted to match the trim on the rest of the home. They have a square foot painting cost of between $2 and $3 per sq.ft., so the larger the porch the higher the overall cost to paint. Your costs could also be higher if you have a lot of decorative trim on your porch or railings 7. The cost to paint a more detailed porch railing could add $1 to $2 more per sq. ft. Having exposed eaves 8 not covered by a soffit 6 is uncommon, but can be found occasionally. Painting the eaves can be awkward as they are the roof’s underside that juts out from the house. Some painters may use a sprayer or a roller rather than a brush for this area. Eaves should also be treated like trim, with an average cost to paint of $1-$3 per linear foot. Painting the interior of your home can give it a fresh new look. People paint their interiors to revive tired or dirty walls, match a new interior design, brighten a dark room, or to visually change the scope of the area. Because many interiors follow what’s known as a “color story,” or a cohesive color design throughout the home, it’s not uncommon to paint the entirety of a home interior at one time.

Another type of paint is on the market that claims to be a primer and paint in one. Basically, it’s just thicker paint and costs twice as much as regular paint. Most professional painters aren’t fans, but if you have exterior walls in excellent condition already, and the self-priming paint is the same color as the original paint color, it could certainly save painting time with one coat going on instead of two. A moisture meter will let your contractor know if there’s moisture in the stucco before starting. The wetter the material, the less ready it is to be sanded, painted, finished or covered. Your contractor will use a premixed stucco repair patch material to fill any small holes and will paint on dry days to avoid sealing in water. Painting rough stucco requires more paint. Brush painting stucco costs $112 per 100 sq. ft., roll painting costs $55 per 100 sq. ft., and spray painting stucco costs $25 per 100 sq. ft. Louisville House Painting

Painting a straight line, also called cutting in a line, is another painting technique worth mastering (Photos 7 – 9). Begin by removing excess paint from the brush either by laying it off onto the piece you’re painting or by wiping it on the edge of the can. Then, holding the brush like a pencil with the bristles edgewise (Photo 8), draw down along the line. If too much paint begins to build up under the bristles, threatening to spill across the line, sweep the brush away from the line. Then go back up to the top of the stroke and draw down again, moving the paint closer to the line. Continue this process until you’ve cut in the entire line.
Maintaining a wet edge is one of the most important techniques in painting (Photo 3). Simply put, always try to brush or roll back into paint that’s still wet. The result will be a uniform, seamless-looking coat of paint. The larger the area you’re painting, the more difficult this task becomes. Use natural breaks like door and window casings or courses of siding to divide large areas into manageable chunks. Then complete each section without stopping. Paint three or four courses of siding from one end to the other, for example. Then move down to the next four courses and repeat the process.
To get basic measurements, measure the length and width of each wall you want to paint in inches. Multiply the length and height together, and divide by 144. This will give you the square footage for each wall. A gallon of paint typically covers around 400 square feet. In some cases, you may need a primer 1 first, then a single coat of paint, meaning that you may need one gallon of primer and one gallon of paint to cover 400 square feet. However, if the wall requires multiple coats, this will increase the total amount of square footage required, and therefore the amount of paint. Louisville Home Painting
